First Session (What to Expect)
First Session (What to Expect)
The first session (Intake) is typically 60-90 minutes. It includes completing paperwork, if not already done, and gathering additional information from you as the parent or guardian. If necessary, we will discuss more specific information about you/child's history, i.e., current or past issues that your child may be experiencing at home, school, or other settings as well as other family history. Based on your child's age and issues, it may or may not be appropriate to visit with the child and parent(s) separately. With teens, it is customary for the teen and parents to be interviewed separately to begin to establish rapport between the teen and counselor.
With this information, the counselor will begin developing treatment plans/goals to use in subsequent sessions.
Parents are always involved in planning and goal setting.
